"On the other side of every mountain [was] another mountain." “Nations have recently been led to borrow billions for war; no nation has ever borrowed largely for education. Probably, no nation is rich enough to pay for both war and civilization. We must make our choice; we cannot have both. “ “I know not with what weapons WWIII will be fought, but WWIV will be fought with sticks and stones.”

Society’s problems  women following careers  not taking ‘every woman’s dream’. The suburbs appeared to control women’s power – NOW

The ratio of men to women going to college was 9:1. "Women who failed to conform to the June Cleaver/Margaret Anderson role of housewife and mother were severely criticized. A 1947 bestselling book, The Modern Woman, called feminism a "deep illness," labeled the idea of an independent woman a "contradiction in terms," and explained that women who wanted equal pay and equal educational opportunities were engaged in a "ritualistic castration" of men."

Even ‘Toys’ were used to control women. Barbie (Girls)  Good Mommy Action Figure (Boys)  America's Movable Fighting Man Betty Friedan  independent and respected  National Organization for Women and the Nation Abortion Rights Action League.

BEFORE THE 1950’s

Young people were expected to go and work so they could provide for their families. Near the 1950’s only about half of the US population had their high school diploma. Little leisure time. No extra money. IT ALL CHANGED WHEN THE 1950’s CAME…

DURING THE 1950’s EDUCATION BEING PROMOTED

Jeans, motorcycles, rebellious

IT ALL CHANGED in the 1950’s. After the Great Depression was over, there was no more need for the young to drop out of high school to go to work, so education started being promoted more and more. This meant that “ Childhood Dependence” increased and now the 15, 16, 17, and 18 year olds had free time in their hands. With all this free time for themselves, different activities started to surround the “ teenagers”. Companies began marketing for this new group of consumers. Clothing, music, and art was promoted. This is what they (adults) called the “ Youth Culture” Movies also had a great impact showing what was the youth in America in the 1950’s, films such as “Rebel Without A Cause” showed how was the culture now, blue jeans, motorcycles, rock & roll and rebelliousness.

Rise of Youth Power:

QUIZ: 1. TRUE OR FALSE: Before the 1950’s the young generation had leisure time and extra money to spend on whatever they wished. 2. Was education promoted during the 1950’s? Why? 3. What would you say is the major difference between the post 1950’s young generation to the 1950’s generation.
