IT ALL CHANGED in the 1950’s. After the Great Depression was over, there was no more need for the young to drop out of high school to go to work, so education started being promoted more and more. This meant that “ Childhood Dependence” increased and now the 15, 16, 17, and 18 year olds had free time in their hands. With all this free time for themselves, different activities started to surround the “ teenagers”. Companies began marketing for this new group of consumers. Clothing, music, and art was promoted. This is what they (adults) called the “ Youth Culture” Movies also had a great impact showing what was the youth in America in the 1950’s, films such as “Rebel Without A Cause” showed how was the culture now, blue jeans, motorcycles, rock & roll and rebelliousness.
