Can we measure the 3D xylem structure? ● The problem remains to measure pieces of wood that are large enough to characterize network topology at a relevant scale with a sufficient level of spatial resolution. Can we measure it? ● yes, conduit aggregation could be added to the standard variables measured in studies of wood anatomy. ● likely to be more relevant in angiosperms. Xylem physiology The significance of xylem hydraulic plasticity for reconstructing past environments: Kippel, May 15 th – 17 th Fagus sylvatica, stem

Final remarks ● The topology of the xylem network matters, both in theory and practice. ● We are currently unable to measure the topology of the xylem network (in 3D) at the relevant spatial scale. ● However, reasonable estimates can be obtained from the spatial arrangement of conduits in 2D (e.g., cross-sections). ● Still unclear how the different measures of conduit spatial arrangement relate to each other and with other xylem traits and key environmental variables. ● Conduit aggregation varies across years and should be taken into account in retrospective studies of wood anatomy.
