A Brief History of Latin America Unit 2, Lesson 2

1.Set up your notebook with title, objective, and date. 2.Write down HW in your planner. 3.Answer the questions below. SWBAT define a cultural region and explain the common history, language and traditions that make up Latin America. Use the graph to answer the following questions. 1.Which months receive less than 4 inches of rain? 2.Which months receive more than 12 inches of rain? 3.How much total rain does the winter usually get?

What is a cultural region? A cultural region is a place that shares a common history, beliefs and cultural traditions. Latin America, as a cultural region, includes South America, Central America, Mexico and parts of the Caribbean.

What is the Latin America’s Common History? Latin America was once dominated by large civilization—the Incan, Aztec, and Mayan empires. These empires left a lasting influence on architecture, food, and language. Spanish Words from Nahuatl (Aztec) coyote, chile, techalote, chicle, tomato, guacamole, Mexico, Guatamala, and many many more!

Shared History of Colonization The Mesoamerican empires were conquered and colonized by European conquistadors and European colonists, mostly from Spain and Portugal.

Lasting Influence of Colonization: Language, food, religion and traditions are all things passed down that still dominate the culture of the entire region.
