Requirements Provide proton beam with the proper time structure from the Recycler to the muon campus for the g-2/mu2e experiments. 2

Mu2e Beam Requirements Mu2e bunch structure and spill cycle. Bunches narrower than 200 nsec and 1E12 ppb are required. Extractions of Mu2e proton bunches from Recycler. 59 msec between extractions (17Hz); total of 8 extractions per MI cycle ( 1.33 sec) 3

G-2 Beam Requirements Proton bunches narrower than 120 nsec (140 nsec is the size of the muon storage Ring) and intensity of 1E12 ppb are required. Extractions of g-2 bunches from Recycler. 10 msec between bunch extractions (100 Hz); 16 bunches per MI cycle (12 Hz). 4

Bunch formation in Recycler In order to formulate the proton bunches required from Mu2e/g-2 a total of 80 KV of 2.5 MHz rf is required in the Recycler. A minimum of 90 msec is required for the bunch formation. Current scheme achieves as good or better results than the original scheme by using only one rf system instead of 3(2.5MHz, 5 MHz and barrier rf). The proposed bunch formation scheme was tested in MI using the 2.5 MHz coalescing cavities. Good agreement with simulations. Created 120 nsec long bunches (94.5% of particles). 5

6 2.5 Mhz from 3 to 65 kV in 90 ms (94.6% particles inside 120 ns) Simulation: 3-70 KV in 90 msec (95% of particles within 120 nsec) 2.5 Bunches in MI.

Scope New 2.5 MHz RF system in Recycler to provide the required beam structure. Will also provide cavities for mu2e experiment. New RR extraction Kickers to kick the proton beam out of the Recycler. New beam-line to connect Recycler to the existing P1 line. An extension to the MI-52 will be needed to accommodate the new kickers and the kicker cooling skid. (Not a part of this AIP). 7

2.5 MHz RF We cannot use the existing MI coalescing cavities because they do not have active cooling. New cavity design with cooling plates between ferrites (9 total cavities). We will re-use the ferrites and PAs from existing coalescing cavities (additional ferrites and PAs will be needed) Coalescing cavities in MI (5 2.5 MHz MHz) Cross sections of the 2.5 MHz coalescing cavity Coalescing cavity PA 8 40’’ 20”

2.5 MHz coalescing cavities In MI MHz cavities were used to produced ~60 KV of rf for bunch coalescing. Each cavity had a shunt impedance of 50Kohms and a Q of 125. They were only used during shot set-ups and during antiproton transfers from Accumulator to Recycler with an overall duty factor of 0.2% corresponding to an average power dissipation of 4.5 watts/cavity. For g-2/Mu2e the duty factor of the 2.5 MHz cavities will be at least 40% corresponding to 900 watts power dissipation per cavity. A new cavity design with cooling plates between ferrites will be required. 9

RR To P1 Beam line P1 Line MI RR Total length 43 m. Simple beam line but located in a very busy area with a lot of interferences. Very challenging installation. Have to shield both Recycler and the new beam line from MI fields. MI-52 Extraction Region 10

The magnets will be of the new RKB style designed for ANU. We are going to re-use the beam tubes from the recently decommissioned Recycler kicker magnets. We are going to re-use the PFLs from the Recycler kickers. Two new 25 Ohm loads capable of up to 250 W average power will be built. A flurinet cooling skid will be used to cool the loads.
