Fire, Smoke & Air Quality: Tools for Data Exploration & Analysis : Data Sharing/Processing Infrastructure This project integrates disparate data sources and provides data analysis tools to understand characteristics of fires and their air quality impact. Data Catalog and Access Dozens of datasets on aerosols, emissions, fire, meteorology, GIS Aerosol Datasets Software Tools Dozens of datasets on aerosols, emissions, fire, meteorology, GIS DataFed Goals Facilitate the flow of atmospheric data from provider to users Support user-driven data processing value chains Participate in specific application projects Software for the Developer Software for registering distributed datasets to the data federation Web services for data access, processing and rendering Web service chaining for composing custom-designed data views DataFed Technologies and Architecture Form-based, third-party wrapping of distributed data XML Web services for the execution of specific tasks Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) for building loosely coupled application programs Data and Tools for Air Quality Monitoring and Analysis through the Web Center for Air Pollution Impact and Trend Analysis (CAPITA) Washington University in St. Louis AVHRR (red) and MODIS (blue) derived fire pixels during June 16- June23, Data source: NOAA Satellite Services Division Meteorological Datasets Interactive Data Browser FASTNETFASTNET: Fast Aerosol Sensing Tools for Natural Event Tracking This Inter-RPO/NESCAUM pilot project characterizes the natural haze condition through detailed analysis of from forest fires, windblown dust and other sources. FASTNET datasets Over a dozen real-time and historical datasets are accessible to the community for the documentation of natural aerosol events. The data list includes satellite and surface data as well as models. Software tools The FASTNET software tools include web-based Analysts Consoles (collections of related data views shown on a single page), animation tools and special processing/display tools Natural Aerosol Event Analyses The initial FASTNET project includes the detailed analysis of several historical ( ) and current (2004) aerosol events. FASTNET Progress Report III, June orts/ProgRep0406 June 2000 SEAWiFS satellite data were processed to derive daily, 1 km surface reflectance maps for Spectral (8 color, mm) is an indicator of the land cover type (water, vegetation, soil, urban …) The ‘co-retrieval’ technique simultaneously derives both the surface and aerosol reflectance Time series illustrate the seasonal pattern of surface reflectance for different surfaces Applications of surface reflectance data include: - Vegetation mapping - Land characterization - Aerosol retrieval over land - Radiative balance/climate Reference: S. Integrated Fire, Smoke and Air Quality Data & Tools Network, RPO National Workgroup Meeting October Fire Datasets Fire-related datasets Available datasets include satellite fire detection, surface field observations, emissions inventories, fire weather and model output. Analysis tools Web applications and tools allow users to spatially and temporally aggregate data, spatially interpolate point data, and mathematically (subtract, divide, …) operate on gridded data sets. Data Comparisons A variety of datasets are available for characterizing fire and its air quality impacts from multiple perspectives. This ongoing project is examining spatio-temporal patterns among these datasets. For example, field observations of fire occurrence and size are compared with derived satellite data of fire detection. Aggregated number of fire pixels detected by satellites (MODIS, GOES, AVHRR) in interior Alaska, June - August Data source: NOAA Satellite Services Division, HMS Dataset August 2000 Idaho fire is depicted using SeaWiFS satellite image, ASTR satellite fire detections (red), and EPA AIRS PM 2.5 concentration monitors (yellow). EPA NEI 1999 fire emissions data (wildfire=yellow, prescribed fire=orange) and BLM 1999 fire history, number of acres burned (red circles).
