Rutherford’s Model Day 3

Comparisons to the solar system How did Rutherford’s model support or object to the view that the atom was like the solar system? Discussion

Rutherford’s Model Small, dense, positively charged nucleus Electron’s orbiting around- like planets around the sun – No real changes to the science of electrons since the gold foil experiment didn’t provide much to go on

Electron-planets According to this theory- electrons would be the planets, is there anything wrong with that? The problem is that these “planets” would soon collapse into the nucleus

The problem Electrons would be moving in a circle- this implies centripetal acceleration. And accelerating charges radiate energy- effectively losing energy Less energy implies a smaller velocity and smaller radius, the electron spirals into the nucleus
