Key Energy Saving Activities at Briggs & Stratton 1.Energy Teams 2.Goals 3.Project Approval Process 6 4.Energy Projects –Renewable and Capital Projects –Low-Hanging Fruit 5.Sustainability Employees involved Employees definitely involved Employees involved

7 Briggs & Stratton Energy Team Corporate-wide Monthly Meetings -Facility Updates -Best Practices -New Ideas -Training Benchmarked – Top 4% Miller Park September, 2011

8 SUCCESSES Lighting Retrofits 16 facilities [$1,324,744 Savings] ($537,856 Grant) R&D Engine Power Regeneration [$66,000 Savings] ($118,000 State Grant) Milwaukee Steam and Heating System [$910,000 savings] ($1,259,585 DOE Grant) Poplar Bluff Furnace Damper Control [$386,000 savings] (DOE study) Compressed Air Systems Multiple facilities [$642,000 savings] R&D Milw PB Murray

9 Barriers to Sustainability Employees: Not INVOLVED Not AWARE Not their RESPONSIBILITY Not RECOGNIZED Not a PRIORITY Lack LEADERSHIP Too complicated for the time they “want” to invest

Involvement Awareness Rewards If it is their idea – Employees will make it succeed. They have to be AWARE to support it. They should be RECOGNIZED for successes. 10

EXAMPLES Lighting – NOW? Awareness Fairs Employees Idea Voice of Maintenance Management Good Assessment – Better Assessment 11

New Lighting – Why Now? Thoughts and Rumor: Execs visiting = Polish the cannonball Bad time to spend; waste New Lighting is not that much better 12 Before After REALITY Execs visiting to find opportunity Savings = Good timing As Good or Better lighting

13 Informational poster that was provided to individual Plants.

Energy Awareness Fairs Make it something they can use –Home appliances –New ways to cook Freebies & “things to see” bring them in –CFL/LED give away –Sit in Electric Car Interactive awareness activities –Pedal to power a LED/CFL –Smart phone efficiency apps –Power a wind turbine 14

POWER REGENERATION EMPLOYEE INITIATED Every day the buzz of small engines fills the reliability laboratory inside Briggs & Stratton’s Test Building. Employees continually monitor engines to meet the exacting standards of quality, emissions, durability and reliability. I have an idea: What if we were to capture the energy from the engines being tested and convert it to usable electricity …hmmmm

Project Cost: $216,800 Focus on Energy Grant: $118,600 Project Savings: $48,031/yr (534,000 kWh) Simple Payback: 4.5 yr (2.0 yrs w/ grant) In February 2011, the project went online with 12 test stands designed for use with various engine types and horsepower limits. Each test stand is run by an AC motor using a variable frequency drive on a common 180 amp regenerative bus. POWER REGENERATION 2012 Renewable Energy Project of the Year

Get a Voice with Maintenance Management 1.Asked for a voice at the Weekly Production Meeting. 2.Discussed the cost of compressed air. 3.Detailed our initial plan (leak detection, non-intrusive, required repair efforts from them). 4.These supervisors found two major improper uses that resulted in a savings of $23,500 with a payback of 7 months. 17 Neenah Foundry: June 28, 2011 Implemented Lessons Learned from a DOE INPLT Training Event

Compressed Air Assessment Which way is better? Assessment A: Small group participation with training People trained and then let loose to apply their knowledge in a familiar area, their personal work space on the plant floor 18 Assessment B: No group participation, leaders only; no training; Tell the employees the results of the assessment and what we have to do to save.

Give Employees What They Need to Succeed Provide Awareness, Responsibility Leadership Opportunity Shared Ideas Priority for Action Recognition 19
