EGEE is a project funded by the European Union under contract IST EGEE Induction Course Christos Aposkitis GRNET EGEE 3 rd parties Advanced Induction Course, Athens 20-21/01/05

Athens, 20-21/01/ Objectives of this session Presentation of a sample course (EGEE induction) Course aims Prerequisites for participants Course content Training material

Athens, 20-21/01/ Sample course overview EGEE induction course 2 –day course (16-18 hours) Roughly actual course hours, the rest is breaks Roughly 60% theory, 40% practical hands-on exercises Hands-on sessions in the afternoon of each day This is the basic course for beginners provided by EGEE throughout Europe 8 of these courses will be delivered in Greece 2 in Q in Q – Q participants expected - maximum 40 more than that will make exercises difficult

Athens, 20-21/01/ Course Objectives 1.Understanding of general Grid and e-Science concepts. 2.Orientation to the EGEE infrastructure and middleware. 3.Understanding of the goals, context and structure of the EGEE project. 4.Awareness of current project procedures and tools. 5.Experience from use of an EGEE testbed GILDA, via the GENIUS portal. 6.Command-line exercises

Athens, 20-21/01/ Prerequisites for participants Some general knowledge about Grids A laptop with: Ethernet 10/100 port Optional WiFi Windows or Linux Mozilla 1.6 or IE 5.5 (with Java support) SSH client Optional Cortona VRML for Windows, or OpenVRML for Linux For the command line exercises: Basic UNIX command-line skills

Athens, 20-21/01/ Course outline Day 1: Morning (D1M): Introductions to Grid computing, EGEE Grid middleware (gLite), GILDA and the GENIUS portal; job submission using GENIUS Afternoon (D1A): Getting to know EGEE and the GILDA testbed; data management using GENIUS Day 2: Morning (D2M): The EGEE project and its procedures Afternoon (D2A): Continuing to use GILDA; command-line exercises; looking to the future

Athens, 20-21/01/ Training material Initially available through The NA3 website: The GILDA website: Video tutorials Will be collected and selected by GRNET (March ’05) Finally available at To be updated continually

Athens, 20-21/01/ Other relevant issues Administrative help from GRNET Any questions are welcome, help with logistics, etc. Contact: Where to find participants Create and maintain your own contact lists Advertise in local universities Post-graduate students in relevant fields Hosting sites Requirements already described University rooms that can be reserved for free Coffee breaks Contact GRNET for possible support. We will do our best. Printed material Contact GRNET for possible support. We will do our best. Consider small fees to cover the above Up to 30 Euros per person

Athens, 20-21/01/ Other relevant issues – cont’d Average estimate of 2,5 Mmonths for each course Support to the participants Before the course After the course Patience and persistence required Varying degree of familiarity with Grids Murphy’s law – If something can go wrong, it will, exactly when it should not. During the courses, SA1 will be ready to assist if needed GRNET can also provide one (or more) presenter(s) to help with some sections

Athens, 20-21/01/ EGEE 3 rd conference Athens April 2005, Ledra Marriott There will be trainers’ training sessions before, during and after the event. Strongly suggested Excellent opportunity to get more familiar with EGEE Meet people especially involved in training Get actual training Build confidence to deliver your own courses At least one person from each partner should be there Details for courses and conference programme should be finalised until the end of March

Athens, 20-21/01/ Discussion Q & A Action points
