We want to show you a list of more or less famous European librarians. Maybe some of the names will surprise you, because we associate them with different activities. We invite you to see the presentation.

Hector Berlioz - French Romantic composer, best known for his compositions Symphonie fantastique and Grande messe des morts (Requiem). In 1850 he became head librarian at the Paris Conservatoire Hector Berlioz 1803 –1869

Lewis Carroll - The author of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass. Carroll grew up in Cheshire and Yorkshire, England, after graduating from Oxford with a B.A. in mathematics, he became a sub-librarian at Christ Church there. Lewis Carroll 1832 –1898

Marcel Duchamp was a French-American painter, sculptor and writer whose work is associated with Cubism and Dadaism. Around 1912, Duchamp became tired of painting and worked as a librarian at the Bibliotheque Sainte- Genvieve. Marcel Duchamp 1887 –

Eratosthenes of Cyrene was a Greek mathematician, geographer, poet, astronomer, and music theorist. Eratosthenes was also the chief librarian of the Great Library of Alexandria. Eratosthenes 276 BC – 195 BC

Anatole France - was a French poet, journalist, and novelist. He was a member of the Académie française, and won the Nobel Prize for Literature in recognition of his literary achievements. In 1876 he was appointed librarian for the French Senate. Anatole France

Jacob Ludwig Carl Grimm was a German philologist, jurist and mythologist. He is best known as one of the Brothers Grimm, as the editor of Grimm's Fairy Tales. Jacob Grimm worked as a librarian in Kasel, after graduating with a law degree. Jacob Grimm 1785 –

David Hume - Scottish historian and philosopher. Hume was appointed librarian for the Advocates’ Library. David Hume

Gottfried Wilhelm von Leibniz was a German mathematician and philosopher. Leibniz served three consecutive rulers of the House of Brunswick as historian, political adviser, and most consequentially, as librarian of the ducal library. Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz 1646 –

Adam Mickiewicz was a Polish national poet, essayist, translator, publicist and political writer. A prime representative of the Polish Romantic period, he is one of that country's Three Bards and the greatest poet in all Polish literature. Pope Pius XI – Born Ambrogio Damiano Achille Ratti, this future pope went from being the chief librarian at the Milan seminary to becoming vice prefect of the Vatican Library. He even developed his own classification system. Pope Pius XI
