Skill Review Close Reading for ACTIVE Reading Pay attention to timing. Underline GIST Visualize Pay attention to timing. 5 minutes to read 3.5 minutes to answer questions 8.5 minutes total per passage

Be prepared for the questions: On the prose, what is each question testing? Characterization Narrator/Point of View What does the passage reveal about a character? Speech, thoughts, looks, actions, others opinions Inferences Use text clues to uncover unstated ideas Character, setting, plot, tone, theme, vocabulary

Practice: “Golden Glass” Close Read Underline, GIST, Visualize 5 minutes to read, 3.5 minutes to answer

Answers Answers: 1. C 4. F 7. D 10. H 2. J 5. B 8. H 3. A 6. G 9. B Report your score on the chart. Multiply times 4 to predict your Raw Score. Translate to Scale Score.

Attacking the Questions Read the “stem” carefully! Do your best with words you don’t know. Use Process of Elimination Read the question and then reread the passage if you need to. Use your markings to quickly find info in the passage if the question doesn’t give you line numbers. Fill in every bubble! No penalty for guessing.

Question Strategy #1 Process of Elimination! Quickly eliminate two answers, and then select your best answer. This will significantly increase your odds! 50/50 chance to get it right!

Sample Question The passage establishes that Vida and Ted have all of the following traits in common EXCEPT: A willingness to accommodate the requests each makes of the other A response to elements of nature A perception of others that surfaces in humor An awareness of what delights the other

Question Strategy #2 If you read closely, you should be able to answer some questions without looking back. But, other questions “require” you to re-read to find an accurate answer. When do you take the time to go back?

Examine Last Passage Question 1: Use P of E first. Use GISTS to find specific info if you need to reread. Question 2: Don’t go back. Passage as a whole. Use P of E. Question 3: Go back! Read question then reread paragraphs. Question 4: Go back! Vocab. questions rely on context. Continue with the other questions.

Question 5: Use P of E first Question 5: Use P of E first. Use GISTS to find part about Ted as a boy to reread. Question 6: Don’t go back. Use P of E. Passage as a whole. Question 7: Go back! Vocab! Question 8: Have to go back! Reread that portion. Question 9: Use P of E first. Use GISTS to find redwood part if you need to reread. Question 10: Use P of E first. Use GISTS to find top floor part if you need to reread.

When to go back to the passage… Questions about meaning of words. Questions about paragraphs. Questions that you remember seeing that wording in the passage. After you have used process of elimination and think the text can help you weed out the final answer.

When NOT to go back to the passage… Questions about the passage as a whole. Questions about ideas that you read well the first time and, therefore, you remember them well. Questions where process of elimination gets you to the answer.

Passages 2, 3 and 4 Passage 2: Social Sciences History, psychology, sociology…the study of people. Passage 3: Humanities Art and culture Passage 4: Science Theories, elements, scientific discoveries

Be prepared for the questions: Main idea of the passage or a paragraph Relationships: cause-effect, problem-solution, comparisons, etc. Identifying details Inferences Vocabulary Ideas implied by the facts Author’s tone or opinion

Practice: “Steamboat Business” Active Reading…No Reading Coma! Read Closely: Underline, GIST, Visualize Be aware of main ideas and relationships as you read (GIST). 5 minutes to read.

Attack the Questions Three and a half minutes. Use Process of Elimination. Go back to reread when necessary. Answers: 11. D 15. C 18. F 12. G 16. F 19. C 13. D 17. C 20. J 14. G

General Timing Strategies More practice…feel what 5 minutes and 3.5 minutes is like. Use the clock or a digital wrist watch. Take a second to write a “stop time” at the top of the passage. When you get to the next passage, write a new stop time. If you can answer more correct with more time, focus on the first three passages. Get as many correct as possible, and then rush the last passage. 8/10 correct x 3 = 24 = scale score 22!

Practice: two passages back to back “A History of Arts and its Movements” and “discovery of certain elements” Strategy 1: Go for 5 and 3.5! Write your goal end time at the top of the first passage. After you finish, check in with your time and quickly write your goal end time for the second passage. Aim for 8.5 minutes each. Strategy 2: Take your time with the first passage and try to get them ALL correct. Then rush the last passage.

Reflect If the strategy you used worked and you got a score you were happy with, keep doing that! If you didn’t get a score you like, try the other strategy next week.

Refine Your Skills Read, read, read! Practice Close Reading: Read a news article, then repeat as many details as possible without looking. Practice annotation with textbooks or literature. Practice the focus and energy it takes to read well. Practice reading short excerpts from challenging pieces.
