Let’s Move! Child Care “The risk of obesity starts early in life. Over half of obese children become overweight by the age of 2, and approximately one in five children are overweight or obese by their 6 th birthday.” -- The White House Task Force on Childhood Obesity 2

Kids Today…  Three times more children are obese today than just 30 years ago  Nearly a third of kids in America are overweight or obese  More children are being diagnosed with obesity-related conditions that were traditionally only seen in adults 3

You can make a difference  As kids’ bodies and brains develop, they can form unhealthy food preferences and habits that are hard to break  That’s why Let’s Move! Child Care was launched – a nationwide call-to-action that empowers child care providers to make positive healthy changes in children, early on, that could last a lifetime 5

5 Simple Steps to Success  1. Increase Physical Activity Provide 1-2 hours of physical activity throughout the day, including outside play when possible 6

5 Simple Steps to Success  2. Limit Screen Time None under age 2. For 2 and up, work to limit to 30 minutes per week during child care. Aim for no more than 2 hours a day of quality screen time at home 7

5 Simple Steps to Success  3. Encourage Healthy Eating Serve fruit or vegetables at every meal, eat meals family-style whenever possible, and avoid serving fried foods 8

5 Simple Steps to Success  4. Offer Healthy Beverages Give water during meals and all day. Avoid sugary drinks. Two and up, serve low- or non-fat milk and 4-6 ounces max of 100% juice a day 9

5 Simple Steps to Success  5. Support Infant Feeding Provide breast milk to infants of mothers who wish to breastfeed. Welcome mothers to nurse mid-day and support parents’ decisions with infant feeding 10
