AUGUST 2014 SUMMER READING “ESSAY” “MY NAME” PEER EDIT

QUESTIONS TO CONSIDER BEFORE TRADING PAPERS What is the literal meaning (denotation) of your name? What do people think of when they hear your name? What do you think of? (connotation) Imagery – paint me a picture, think outside the box What does your name sound like? What about when your mom says it? What about when your boyfriend/girlfriend says it? What does it taste like when you say it? What does it look like? What does it feel like? Does it hold significance for your family? Why or why not? How does that make you feel? Is it short for another name? Does the shortened version fit better than the “real” version? How does it show YOUR personality? Would another name fit you better? Why?

CRITERION C Clear connection between name and sense of personal or cultural identity Consider the literal meaning and the figurative meaning (imagery of it!) Engaged in process of telling your story Consider your voice (interested/committed), unique WAY of telling, emotion, opinion, personality Not like a factual essay Vocabulary that creates a picture for the audience Stories, specific details, figurative language Clearly organized into paragraphs Paragraphs AND sentences of varying length In IB terms: produces texts that demonstrate a high degree of personal engagement with the creative process; demonstrates a high degree of insight, imagination or sensitivity and perceptive exploration of and critical reflection on new perspectives and ideas makes perceptive stylistic choices in terms of linguistic, literary and visual devices, demonstrating good awareness of impact on an audience selects extensive relevant details and examples to develop ideas with precision

CRITERION D Vocabulary appropriate for both demonstrating your voice AND academic writing Does it sound like your words? Don’t try to be TOO fancy here! Can you choose more illustrative words? Instead of “when my mom yells at me” what about “when my mom spits out my name in a rage…” Consistent voice throughout What tone do you have? How do you feel about your name? Do you stay with that attitude throughout? No spelling errors – use spell check!!! Their, there, they’re… were, we’re… etc… Watch run-on sentences! Effectively communicates one idea throughout Do you like your name or not? Does it represent who you are (whether that is good or not?) Is it who you want to be? effectively uses a range of appropriate vocabulary, sentences and forms of expression writes and speaks in a consistently appropriate register and style that serve the context and intention uses grammar, syntax and punctuation with a high degree of accuracy; errors are minor and communication is effective spells/writes and pronounces with a high degree of accuracy; errors are minor and communication is effective makes effective use of appropriate non-verbal communication techniques

MLA FORMAT Header in top right corner Heading in top left corner Your Name My Name Class 28 August 2014 Title Double spaced Paragraphs (indented in first line)

LAST THOUGHTS – JOT THEM ON THE BACK! Three columns: Questions (What do you still want to know after reading? What doesn’t make sense? What questions might someone else have?) Concerns (If you don’t have any, pretend that you are Ms. Darras. What would I be concerned about with the paper?) Commendations (What did your partner do well? Give specifics!)
