Carotid Artery Stenting Narrowing of carotid arterial walls due to plaque build-up Could lead to stroke Previous Solution Surgical: Carotid Endarterectomy (CEA) New, less invasive solution: Carotid Artery Stenting Problem: Possible embolization in the brain resulting in a stoke. Solution: Embolic Protection Devices Heart Center Online

Project Goals Research distal protection filters and determine which features provide the best protection. Incorporate the best features into our redesign while adding new ones. Build the prototype. Test the prototype in a flow loop system that simulates the carotid arterial circulation. Determine the efficiency of the redesign in capturing particles similar in size to embolic debris.

Milestones/Timeline Build prototype using Solidworks – End of January Manufacture prototype – Middle of February Individually train to use the flow loop design – End of February Test prototype in flow loop – March Perform statistical analysis on data – Early April

My Personal Focus Research effects of filter pore size and shape efficiency. Done Sandeep and I will build computerized prototype using Solidworks. 75 % Complete Use COSMOSFloWorks to perform some preliminary testing via computational analysis. Incomplete As a group, we will run several tests on the prototype using the flow loop system at Carnegie Mellon. Incomplete

SolidWorks Preliminary Design

Possible Problems Manufacturing Specifications of our design Material Actual prototype functions the way we have designed it to function.
