Work Experience Orleans Park School 7-18 th July 2014 Organised in collaboration with Richmond Education Business Partnership

Work experience… Provides the ideal opportunity for students to:  experience working life whilst still at school  work in an adult environment  develop self confidence, social and personal skills  learn how to work well with people outside school  gain a working insight into possible career options  impress an employer and obtain a vital reference

Who is involved in the process? REBP  Provides a link between school and employer  Produces job descriptions  May visit employers premises to carry out checks  Provides advice and guidance to schools and employers  Maintains a database of approved employers for those who are unable to source their own placement School  Obtains parental permission  Provides advice and guidance to parents and students  Supplies students with relevant documentation  Prepares students for their placements

Who else is involved… Parents/Carers PLEASE  Encourage and help your child to find their own placement  Provide permission for your son/daughter to complete a placement  Look at your son’s/daughter’s job description and contact school with any concerns Students PLEASE  Search for placements  Meet school deadlines  Share your job description with your parent/carer  Prepare for your placement

How to find a placement CONSIDER YOUR CHOICES  Think about your local area  Talk to family and friends  Research the internet THEN  Make a phone call OR  the company OR  Write a letter OR  Call on employer

Help is at hand…….. Resources are available to assist students on the work experience website. Once placements are arranged, an Own Find Form must be completed and submitted to school right away

Guidance for Own Find placements Should  Be safe and secure  Have employer liability insurance  Provide meaningful work  Be for a full two weeks  Be organised by February 2014 Should not  Be one to one working  Sole traders  Be working in a residential property (exception of OFSTED registered nurseries)  Be working with relatives unless within a large organisation  Be abroad

Alternatively…  Select work area options from REBP’s database of jobs  REBP will allocate a placement and carry out necessary checks when needed  Once a job has been confirmed, it cannot be changed.

The work experience Database allows Students to select from a variety of work areas and locations

How you can help  Discuss possibilities and research work areas with your son/daughter  Ensure deadlines are followed  Provide interview guidance  Encourage your son/daughter to plan their journey to work  Encourage son/daughter to complete log book

Next steps and deadlines Own find forms to be submitted by 17 th Feb 2014 Database choices to be made by 28 th Feb 2014 Once placements are arranged students must contact their employer to arrange an interview to secure the placement

Any questions?
