1.LOCATION  Where is it?

ABSOLUTE LOCATION  A street address: –609 Hempstead Ave. West Hempstead, NY West Hempstead, NY  A map address: -Latitude and Longitude

RELATIVE LOCATION  Saying where a place is in relation to another place: - The library is a few blocks from school - New York is in the North-Eastern part of the United States

2.PLACE What is the place like?  PHYSICAL FEATURES - Things that occur naturally: climate mountains climate mountains deserts bodies of water deserts bodies of water plants animals plants animals  HUMAN FEATURES –Characteristics of people: population jobs language customs religion government

3. HUMAN / ENVIRONMENTAL INTERACTION  How do people use, adapt to, or change their environment? –Examples of this are using trees for firewood, or coal to warm us in winter, rivers to transport goods and natural resources like oil and coal, to sell or exchange for other needed items that are not available

HUMAN / ENVIRONMENTAL INTERACTION  How do people use, adapt to, or change their environment? –An example of how people adapt is when people who live in very cold climates wear well-insulated clothes to keep warm.

HUMAN / ENVIRONMENTAL INTERACTION  How do people use, adapt to, or change their environment? –Artificially watering your lawn, if you live in a dry area is one example, or on a grander scale, creating fertile land in desert areas to grow food crops. Another good example is clearing forests to make room for growing crops.

4.MOVEMENT How are people and places linked?  Highways, railroads, and rivers are examples of transportation that move people and goods from place to place.  Television, newspapers, books, and computers are examples of communication tools that move information and ideas from place to place.

5.REGIONS How can we organize the world to better understand it?  Physical Features: landforms, natural resources, climate.  Human Features: politics, economic, religion, customs or language.
