韓國留學協會 (KOSA) 1

KOSA is a Korean representative of FELCA. The only agency association of South Korea. KOSA's main focus is to protect and support Korean students that are studying overseas and to develop the global education industry. KOSA maintains close cooperation relationship domestic education departments and international diplomatic offices. KOSA strives to protect students' rights, and to provide quality educational consulting. KOSA invites leading educational institutions of the world to Korea for education seminars and conferences. KOSA also hosts domestic seminars for local students, parents, and KOSA members to widen their insights and accurate knowledge on overseas education. KOSA introduces Korean education globally to foreign countries. KOSA is running Customer Protection Center to take care of unfair trade cases of the students. Through this service, KOSA strengthens ethics of many agencies and differentiate the member and non-member agencies. All KOSA members must go by the policy terms provided by KOSA. 2. 1 out of 7 studies abroad 2. 1 out of 7 studies abroad - ‘Degree’ in the US / ‘Language learning’ in China The student population studying abroad is constantly increasing. -> Korea is a typical country that sends out study-abroad students The students studying abroad are -> only 15% of the undergraduate and graduate students in Korea (1.61million) -> the number is growing faster than students enrolled in Korea universities -> the average annual rate of increase between 2001 and 2009 : 5.5% (study-abroad students) vs. 1.5% (students in Korea) A big trend to go to China for language learning and to the US for a degree. Under the influence of high growth of Chinese economy over the past decade, the number of students studying language in China is close to 38 thousands -> over three times the number of students studying language in the US (11 thousands) -> Percent of students studying language (out of total foreign students) in the US and China : 16.6% (US) vs. 56.8% (China) The number of foreign students in the US - about 70 thousands, steadily increasing -> graduate students: significantly reduced / undergraduate students: increasing rapidly -> Percent of foreign undergraduate and graduate students in the US : 40:48 (2001) -> 70:48 (2007) 7

Study Abroad Market of Korea * Accelerated Multi-cultural society with an influx of International student into Korea since 2000 The upward trend of foreign students in Korea - In 2005 : 22 thousands > In 2011 : 89 thousands * Language and many other course occupying in a large part of study abroad - In degree course: 66.7% for foreign students in Korea - In language and many other course: 33.3% * Increasing demographic representativeness of multi-cultural society as the rate of international student in Korea grows from 1.8% to 6.4% among the foreign populations - The rate of international students among the foreign populations in Korea : 1.78%(‘00) > 3.01%(‘05) > 6.42%(‘09) * However, bias phenomenon lasted according to the region and major -Nationality: China(70.5%), Japan(5.2%), Mongolia(3.6%), America(2.5%) -Major(excepting training): social humanities(69.7%), natural science and engineering(16.1%), science track(6.9%) 11

* The spread of caution for local students’ study abroad due to recorded the deficits for a long period in spite an influx of International student into Korea * The continuous improvement needed for the international student ratio in Korea below the OECD average although the foreign students are increasing drastically -Improvement in national innovative capability as the foreign student ratio increases in domestic field -The result of analysis : College patent application increased 6.8 % as international graduate students increased 10% -The foreign students ratio(4.7%) falls below OECD average 6.8% * Improvement in openness and magnanimity of Korean society needed by priority for attracting the foreign students - Openness about foreign culture ranked last in the world remains obstacles to both attracting the foreign students and advance in multi-cultural society. -The ranking about Korean openness for IMD foreign culture : 55 among 55 countries (in 2008) - > 56 among 57 countries (in 2009) -Reinforcement of curriculum for improving the understanding of the multi-cultures in Elementary, junior high, high school and even college 7. Excluding Language Course Students in Korea High proportion in professional programs -As of 2007, the most popular major among study-abroad students throughout the world was Business Management. Natural Science comes next, then Engineering, Humanities and Social Science were followed. -According to this chart, 37% of study-abroad students throughout the world majored in professional programs, which are Business Management and Engineering. -However, in Korea, Language Course and Humanities and Social Science took 33 percent of all majors. -This means that professional programs were relatively less popular among domestic foreign students. 10.
