Naming Ionic Compounds

Ionic Name Vs Formula  Ionic formulas use chemical symbols to represent the atoms participating in a bond. Ex: NaCl, K 2 O, RbOH  Ionic names use words to represent the atoms participating in a bond. Ex: sodium chloride, potassium oxide, rubidium hydroxide  IUPAC Naming Rules are the ones adopted by the International Society of Chemists.

Ionic Naming Rules 1. The metal is always first. Use the element name from the periodic table. Be careful!! NH 4 + is the only polyatomic ion that comes first in an ionic bond! 2. The non-metal or polyatomic ion is second. For polyatomic ions, use the name on ½ sheet. For non-metals, change the ending to “-ide” (how do you know if there is a polyatomic ion involved? – if there are more than 2 element symbols written in the formula) Ex: What is the name for MgCl? Mg: magnesium Cl: chlorine magnesium chloride Ex: What is the name for RbOH? Rb: rubidium OH: hydroxide rubidium hydroxide ide

More Examples…  Write the correct name for: a. NH 4 F (polyatomic ion – 3 symbols) b. CaCO 3 (polyatomic ion – 3 symbols) c. NH 4 MnO 4 (polyatomic ion – 4 symbols) d. BCl 3 e. Na 3 PO 4 (polyatomic ion – 3 symbols) f. Ca(OH) 2 (polyatomic ion – 3 symbols) ammonium fluoride calcium carbonate Ammonium permanganate boron chloride sodium phosphate calcium hydroxide

Transition Metals in Ionic Bonds  As you remember from the last unit, transition metals can take more than one charge  Therefore, we must specify the charge in the name. We do this by using roman numerals.  What is the charge on the following transition metals? Ex: titanium (III) chloride +3 Ex: chromium (II) phosphate +2

Writing Ionic Names with Transition metals..  Undo the “cheerleader maneuver” by criss crossing the subscripts back to where they came from.  Look at the charge on the transition metal. Use a roman numeral to represent it. I = 1 II = 2 III = 3 IV = 4 ScO 21 Scandium oxide(I) TiS 23 (III)titanium sulfide

More practice… For each of the following, undo the cheerleader maneuver to come up with the correct name. a. TiCl 3 b. Mn(OH) 2 c. AgF 2 d. FeMnO 4 e. AgCl titanium (III) chloride iron (I) permanganate manganese (II) hydroxide silver (II) fluoride silver (I) chloride
