TROUBLE WITH GENIUSES PART 2 By Tushaya Singh & Jill Frega

THE MAIN IDEA & DISCUSSION The main idea of this chapter was that all the short stories were shared told us about these “geniuses” all had different struggles in getting to where they wanted to be. However the challenges they faced wasn’t caused by being a “genius”; it was caused from other aspects in their life. Connection: In our school many judgments are passed based on the class levels you’re in.

CHRIS LAGAN  - The story of Chris Lagan was that he came from a lower class family, and had a struggle in life.  -Assumptions and judgment played a big role in Chris’s life.  -His future was altered because he was sent to college on a scholarship which his family failed to renew after a year and a half.  - Then he transferred to Montana State.  - Turning point…  - Lagan continued to study physics and math on his own and came up with Cognitive Theoretic Model of the Universe, but without a proper education he was never able to get it published in a scholarly journal.

ROBERT OPPENHEIMER -Robert had a great life; going from Harvard to Cambridge University - His upbringing caused him to have a different outlook on education than Lagan. - From being labelled a “genius” from so young he fell into depression and grew very despondent. -he grew more and more unstable as his life progressed and sadly he ended up in jail for attempting to poison his tutor.

Chris LaganSimilaritiesRobert Oppenheimer -Didn’t have enough money for college, but got scholarships. -His family didn’t try to push him to go to school. -His mother forgot to renew his scholarship at Reed University -He wanted to prove everyone wrong and show them that he was actually something. Here we have two “geniuses” that both faced obstacles when it came to getting a good education. - Had enough money for an excellent education -He was considered a “genius” from a you age. -Struggled with depression and grew emotionally unstable. -Ended up in jail for going crazy and trying to poison his tutor.

FAMILY BACKGROUNDS Different classes in society have different views on education. There are three different types of parenting styles: -strict parents -laid back parents -hyper involved parents Lower Class parents: since they didn’t have money to provide their children with activities and different opportunities, the children were forced to adapt to the environment, and become more independent from a young age -Higher class families constantly had their children in numerous different activities which made them more dependent on their parents and never -The middle and working class they considered the activities that their children did more as hobbies than their passions; they would reason with their kids.

IQ’S -The A group, the B group, and the C group -IQ’s never really mattered with your intelligence according to Gladwell
