Gothic lettering  Key Terms & Definitions  Gothic Lettering: Standard lettering style used in industries today. Gothic letters are made up of lines that are all the same thickness with no serifs. Serif: A fine line or “accent” line that finishes off the stroke of the letter. Sans Serif: A type style that does not have serifs. Ex: Gothic

Gothic lettering  Key Terms & Definitions  Vertical Letters: Letters that stand upright 90° to the bottom (horizontal) guideline. Inclined Letters: Letters that are “italic” or 68 ° in comparison to the bottom (horizontal) guideline.

Gothic lettering? What is  Lettering is the process of placing text on a a drawing. The purpose of lettering is to further clarify the information conveyed by the drawing views.  Technical Drawings must be correctly lettered in order to communicate information to others accurately. Remember, technical drawing is a language that is known & used around the world.

Gothic lettering? What is  Simple free hand lettering, perfectly legible and quickly made, is an important part of the operation of business, industry, and engineering.  Lettering is used on technical drawings to tell the kind of materials, sizes, distances, and amounts; to identify units and to give other necessary information.

Gothic lettering  Hand Lettering Styles  Hand lettering styles can be classified into four general groups: ROMAN, ITALIC, TEXT, and GOTHIC

Gothic lettering  Hand Lettering Styles  ROMAN: Thick thin lines with “accented” strokes. The accented strokes are called serifs. ITALIC: Inclined letters, similar to Roman. TEXT : Includes all styles of Old English, Church, Black, and German text. GOTHIC : Lines that are the same thickness, no serifs.

Gothic lettering  Gothic Lettering Key Factors   Most common style used in working drawings  Most appropriate because it is easy to read & write  Consists of uppercase letters, lowercase letters, and numerals  Most companies use uppercase letters  Letters & numerals may be: vertical or inclined.  Only one type should be used through one set/group of drawings.

Gothic lettering  ANSI Standards  In 1935 the Gothic letters were further standardized when the American National Standards Institute adopted standard alphabets of vertical and inclined letters. According to the ANSI Standard: “Lettering on drawings must be legible and suitable for easy, rapid execution.

Gothic lettering  Quality of Lettering  The appearance of lettering on a drawing is enhanced when the style, height, slope, spacing, and line weight are uniform. The appearance of the drawing and skill of the drafter are reflected in the quality of the lettering.

Gothic lettering  Rules for Uniformity   Never mix uppercase & lowercase letters.  Use guidelines to prevent irregularity.  Avoid thick & thin strokes.  Background areas between letters should appear equal & not be too empty or too full.  Spaces between words should appear equal & not be too large or too small. Do Not space words equal distances apart. Instead, space them by eye so they “appear” to be equal distances apart.

Gothic lettering  Pencil Technique Rules   Learn the shapes  Learn the strokes  Learn the rules of spacing  PRACTICE Do Not space words equal distances apart. Instead, space them by eye so they “appear” to be equal distances apart.

Conner & Worksheet Instruction Materials: Vertical Caps WS (straight strokes), Vertical Caps WS (curved strokes), Vertical Numerals & Fractions WS, Vertical Lettering 4-3, & My Gothic Lettering (favorite song lyrics), Pencil, Mynotebook

regroup !  Practice makes Perfect  Activity Conclusion: Since Gothic is the lettering style used around the world, it is important that I practice writing letters and numerals correctly. With a little effort I will be able to letter accurately, which will in turn show that I am a skilled and detailed drafter.
