Community Colleges and Public Health Initiative Growth in community colleges has NOT paralleled growth in majors and minors ASPPH Framing the Future project and the League for Innovation in the Community College (the League) endorsed public health & health navigation associate degrees and certificate programs (See final report can be downloaded from this webinar) The League is taking the lead in developing the Public Health & Health Navigation initiative

Public Health Associate Degrees Being designed for transfer to bachelor’s degree programs: Public Health Generalist (AAC&U Educated Citizen & Public Health) Health Education (in collaboration with SOPHE) Health Administration (in collaboration with AUPHA) Environmental Health (in collaboration with AEHAP) Community Colleges and Public Health report working with professional organizations recommended specific course work for articulating associate degrees and bachelor’s degree

Health Navigation: New Opportunities Health Navigation associate degrees and certificate programs lead to jobs as community health workers, patient navigators, health insurance navigators (over 100 job titles) New funding sources include hospitals (30 day Medicare readmission rule), Medicaid, Obamacare, community health centers, etc.

League’s Public Health & Health Navigation Initiative League put out “call for planning” in early 2015 to follow-up after approval of Community Colleges and Public Health report Over 20 community colleges responded to planning process Six webinars held in summer 2015 on public health and health education including ASPPH, SOPHE (Health Education) and AEHAP (Environmental Health) will be available online at

League’s “Call for Planning” cont. Plans for new programs submitted December 2015 Six new program plans consistent with the Community Colleges and Public Health report selected as award winning plans Recognition awards will be presented at League’s large March 22 Innovations meeting in Chicago as part of Plenary session on Public Health & Health Navigation education New round of recognition awards

Jones & Bartlett Learning Health Navigation Book Series Four (4) textbook series designed to provide comprehensive Health Navigation curriculum as part of associate degrees or certificates. Principles of Health Navigation by Kay Perrin will be published summer 2016 in time for use in fall courses. Series will cover all the learning outcomes recommended by the League Remaining three (3) books in the series will be published in 2017 Other titles from the Essential Public Health series as well as new books, including Foundations of Health Communication and Personal Health: A Population Perspective are being also being recommended
