1. Fragments

Fragment vs. Sentence complete sentence = one subject and one verb and expresses a complete thought

2. Run-ons

Run-ons happen when…. SENTENCE

Correction #1: Two simple sentences.. SENTENCE

Correction #2: Compound Sentence, for., and, nor, but, or, yet, so SENTENCE Use a comma and a coordinating conjunction

Run-on Sentences two or more simple sentences are combined without correct punctuation. Example: The grocery store was really packed with people there must have been a big sale today. – Correction #1: The grocery store was really packed with people. T here must have been a big sale today. – Correction #2: The grocery store was really packed with people, for there must have been a big sale today.

Comma Splices a type of run-on incorrectly connects two simple sentences connection with only a comma. My family bakes together nearly every night, we then get to enjoy everything we make together. – Correction #1: My family bakes together nearly every night. W e then get to enjoy everything we make together. – Correction #2: My family bakes together nearly every night, and we then get to enjoy everything we make together.

Let’s Practice: Eliminating Comma Splices How should the writer revise to eliminate comma splices errors that interfere with the reader’s understanding? 1.I didn’t like the movie, it was way too long. 2.She and Jerry didn’t want a summer wedding, they are getting married in the fall.
