The Last Passover – Part 2 Matthew 26: While they were eating, Jesus took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is my body.” Then he took the cup, gave thanks and offered it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you, This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for may for the forgiveness of sins.” (26:26-28)

Introduction Four elements of Jesus’ own preparation for His sacrificial death Experiencing the final Passovervv. 17 – 25 Establishing the Lord’s Suppervv. 26 – 30 Helping the impotent disciplesvv. 31 – 35 Praying to the Fathervv. 36 – 39

Establishing the Lord’s Supper (vv ) Three primary elements of the new memorial – The Lord’s Supper The directivevv. 26a, 27 The doctrinevv. 26b, 28 The durationvv. 29

The Directive (vv. 26a, 27) The setting – Judas had left; Jesus was alone with the eleven – “They were eating” – supper was still in progress – Instituted the new memorial in the midst of the old The bread – “Took bread, gave thanks, broke it, gave it to his disciples” – “Take and eat” The cup – “Took the cup, gave thanks, and offered it to them” – “Drink from it, all of you” Normal features of the Passover dinner – Probably the third cup of wine – the cup of blessing – “Is not the cup of blessing which we bless a sharing in the blood of Christ?” (1 Cor. 10:16) While they were eating, Jesus took bread, gave thanks, and broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying “Take and eat;...” Then he took the cup, gave thanks and offered it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you.” (26:26a, 27)

The Doctrine (vv. 26b, 28) Jesus gave new meaning to a normal part of the traditional Passover ceremony Unleavened bread – Old – severance from the old life in Egypt; separation from worldliness and sin and the beginning of a new life of holiness and godliness – New – “This is my body”; Christ’s own body sacrificed for the salvation of men Luke added “do this in remembrance of me.” – Jesus instituted a memorial of His sacrificial death Cup of wine – “This is my blood of the covenant”; Luke added “new covenant” – Blood made atonement for the sins of all mankind, Gentiles as well as Jew, who place their trust in the Lord, Jesus Christ. “This is my body.... This is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness.” (26:26b, 28)

The Duration (v. 29) This event in the upper room began a new remembrance of redemption – Until Jesus Christ returns in glory “Fruit of the vine” – Jewish colloquialism for wine – Jesus said he would not drink it again with the disciples until he could drink it with them in His Father’s kingdom – Assurance of His second coming “I tell you, I will not drink of this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it anew with you in my Father’s kingdom.” (26:29)

Conclusion Supper concluded with the singing of a Psalm in the Hallel Then they went out to the Mount of Olives – Jesus would Pray fervently to His Father Be betrayed by Judas Be arrested by the officers of the chief priests and elders
