Man’s Need for Salvation - Romans 1:18-3:20 The ungodly Gentiles are condemned by their works (1:18- 32) The upright Jews and Gentiles are also condemned (2:1-5) The ungodly and the upright will be judged by their works and be condemned (2:6-16) Jews’ objections are unfounded (2:17-3:19) All men seeking justification by works of the law will be condemned for their sin (3:20)

Justification by faith is different from justification by works of the law (3:21-22)

Romans 3:20-22 NKJV Therefore by the deeds of the law no flesh will be justified in His sight, for by the law is the knowledge of sin. 21 But now the righteousness of God apart from the law is revealed, being witnessed by the Law and the Prophets, 22 even the righteousness of God, through faith in Jesus Christ, to all and on all who believe. …

Three Systems of Justification By Works of the Law Requires perfect works (Rom. 10:5; James 2:10- 11) ONE PROBLEM: –We fail because we sin - Rom. 3:20 –Only Jesus met this standard By Faith Requires perfect faith Does not require perfect works Does not exclude works, requires works - James 2:14-17 By Faith Only Believe in the Lord Jesus and you will be saved – Acts 16:31 Nothing further is required ONE PROBLEM: –God does not offer this way –James 2:24

Those Who are Justified by Faith – Romans 5:1-11 Now they have peace, access, grace, hope (5:1-2)

Romans 5:1-11 NKJV Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, 2 through whom also we have access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.

Those Who are Justified by Faith – Romans 5:1-11 Now they have peace, access, grace, hope (5:1-2) Now even suffering is a cause of glory because of its results (5:3-5) All this rests in their faith and God’s faithful love (5:6- 11)

Romans 5:1-11 NKJV 6 For when we were still without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly.

Romans 5:1-11 NKJV 7 For scarcely for a righteous man will one die; yet perhaps for a good man someone would even dare to die. 8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. 9 Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath through Him.

How Secure is My Justification? As secure as God’s faithfulness And as secure as my faith

Are You Righteous Before God? Will your works justify you? –Only if they are perfect Will your faith justify you? –Only if it is in Jesus Christ –Only if it is living, complete faith Like Paul’s – Phil. 3:8-9

Philippians 3:8-9 NKJV Yet indeed I also count all things loss for the excellence of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, and count them as rubbish, that I may gain Christ 9 and be found in Him, not having my own righteousness, which is from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which is from God by faith;
