Explain the social, political, and economic forces that led to the emergence of sectional political parties before the Civil War.

Evaluate ways in which which political compromise contributed to maintaining continuity as well as fostering change on sectional tensions in the period 1820 to 1861.

Explain how the acquisition of new territories in the West contributed to increased political tension and ideological conflict over slavery.
