Japan Meteorological Agency, May 2014 Coordination Group for Meteorological Satellites - CGMS 10 Test-bed for Inter-comparison of Multiple Volcanic Ash Retrieval Algorithms JMA advantages to establish the testbed –Existing international cooperation schemes –Extended capability of Himawari-8 –Wide area coverage for many volcanos HLPP 3.3 –Foster the continuous improvement of products through validation and inter-comparison through international working groups and SCOPE-type mechanisms. WGII –JMA to establish an environment to implement multiple algorithms to retrieve quantitative ash cloud parameters from operational satellites. This will serve as a test bed for the intercomparison of retrievals on an operational basis in the framework of SCOPE- Nowcasting. JMA is invited to perform an intercomparison based on historical data and report on this to CGMS-42.

Japan Meteorological Agency, May 2014 Coordination Group for Meteorological Satellites - CGMS Satellite-based volcanic cloud retrieval inter-comparison workshop The core organizing committee has been established. The workshop will be held in October 20-23, 2014 in Madison, WI USA. JMA will show the preliminary results of the testbed in the workshop. Expectations of discussion related to selection of volcanic ash cases and the methods of validation and intercomparison. In the testbed, JMA would like to implement the methods standardized in this workshop.
