Ideas for a proposal Communities of Practice – CoP, Ideas, concepts Food for a brainstorm

Ideas for a proposal Modern universities are developing towards loose conglomerates of (inter)discipline expertise that have a high degree of connectedness with society in the broader sense. 21st century universities may also be regarded as 'knowledge servers' in which a number of communities create, share, publish and apply knowledge

Unlike most information systems in educational organizations, the community system is open to the public and is free to use. It's very purpose is to allow people from outside the organization to connect within the realm of the university and to give insiders means to easily connect outside university, all having access to the same set of tools and services, which are extensible with tailor-made functionality.

The example case is Webclasses, which are short digital orientation courses for prospective students. Anyone with access to internet can enroll in these classes and participate in a free distance education course and interact with university teachers and other participants

Our principal objective is to gather people to collaborate and share knowledge on equal merits, regardless of their organization, culture or background. The goal of the project is to merge academic community structures with common internet practices to minimize participation thresholds and maximize their digital accessibility for our target groups. We believe that in order to achieve these goals, we need to develop a specialized set of tools on top of the existing Sakai architecture and create more european aware Sakai, based on support for the major european languages and cultural attitudes

Keywords Communities and collaboration Open content, access and source Everyware Hybrid organizations Collective knowledge management
