Day of the Dead - Altars

Mexican culture mainly is a mixture of what two cultures?

What is an Altar? What do we use Altars for? Have you ever seen an altar in Thailand? Where? What did it look like? In the next slides you will see some pictures of Mexican Altars. Can you tell me 2 Aztec influences and 2 catholic influences?

Making your own Altar You should now have lots of information about what objects are normally included on a Mexican Altar. You will be making your own Altar. You can make the altar for someone that you know who has died, or for a famous person from the past. You will be making your altar in the Mexican style, so you will need to make a good plan on what you should include in your work. To do this, the best way to start is to make a mind map. Write the name of your person in the middle of your mind map, and then think of as many interesting things about that person as you can. Write it down even if it seems silly – you don’t know what you might use later! Next look at the list that you made when you watched the video – how can you include items and ideas about your person, but still stick to the list – use your imaginations! Remember you altar is a happy celebration of your persons life! Make it funny and about the good things that happened to them!
