 Franklin Delano Roosevelt (FDR) is the 32 nd U.S. President  Enacted the New Deal program in response to the Great Depression  Historians named this the 3Rs: relief, recovery & reform

 PWA (Public Works Administration): part of the New Deal that concentrated on the construction of public works such as dams and bridges in order to revive America’s industry  WPA (Works Progress Administration): also part of the New Deal that hired only people on relief (public aid) who were paid directly by the government in order to employ the poorest citizens

By Harper Lee Atticus Finch Jean-Louise “Scout” Finch Jem Finch Charles “Dill” Baker-Harris Bob EwellMayella Ewell Tom Robinson Arthur “Boo” Radley Calpurnia Miss Maudie Mr. Avery Miss Stephanie Crawford Walter Cunningham, Jr.

 Nelle Harper Lee – Born on April 28, 1926 and died on February 19, 2016 in Monroeville, Alabama  Monroeville is a small town much like the fictitious “Maycomb,” the setting of T.K.A.M.  Lee’s father was a lawyer.  Lee’s childhood friend, Truman Capote, was an inspiration for the character “Dill.”  Lee’s intensions were to portray real life in a southern town during the 1930’s.  The “Scottsboro Case” (a case involving racial prejudice against nine black men) became the model of the trial in T.K.A.M.  Lee began T.K.A.M. in the mid-1950’s after moving to New York.

 Lee completed the novel in 1957 just before the peak of the Civil Rights Movement  In 1961, T.K.A.M. won the Pulitzer Prize  Lee removed herself from the public eye, returned to Monroeville, and she continued to live there until her recent death.  T.K.A.M. is a novel about youth seeing the evil, hypocrisy, and injustices in adult society.  This story takes place over a two-year period.

Literary Analysis  Theme & Motif  Theme = the central idea / the author’s implied statement about story events, often concerning one of life’s truths.  Often an author uses a Motif (a frequently repeated incident or idea) to underline an important theme.  motif, motif, motif, motif = theme  The mockingbird, courage, walking in someone else’s shoes, and family background are four major motifs that develop the important theme of – evil, hypocrisy, and injustice in society  “Atticus said to Jem one day, ‘I’d rather you shot at tin cans in the back yard, but I know you’ll go after birds. Shoot all the bluejays you want, if you can hit ‘em, but remember it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird.’
