Instruction  B.S. major program (7 courses/year)  M.S. & Ph.D. programs (8 courses/year)  4 sections/year of MET101 (+6 sections of 101lab)

Undergrad Program  Can meet US Federal Government educational requirements for professional meteorologists  American Meteorological Society guidelines  USAF cadets

 UH Weather Server  Experimental high resolution forecasts for NWS  Experimental forecasts for US Forest Service  Mauna Kea Weather Center forecasts to support Hawaii’s observatory operations  Hawaii State Climate Office  Pacific ENSO Application Center ( with JIMAR )  Pacific Forecaster Training Desk ( with NWS & JIMAR )

Service to International Scientific Community  Editorships  Service & leadership on many important bodies

Research  Observational, Diagnostic, Modelling Studies of Atmospheric Phenomena on a Wide Range of Space and Time Scales  Funding from NSF, NOAA, NASA, ONR, DOE … JAMSTEC (through IPRC)

Key Positive Factors  Co-location with NWS HWFO  Strong and developing connections with research in Asia (Japan, PR China, Taiwan, Korea)  Centrally positioned for key challenges in global environmental change and natural hazards with a Hawaiian focus (e.g. references in latest IPCC report)

Issues (I) Lots of great stuff going on, but  Total space for expanding research efforts, we are already sacrificing, e.g.:  no Chair office  no office for T. Schroeder  Quality & long-term viability of HIG space

Issues (II)  Secretarial support SOEST funds 1 department secretary e.g. compare OCN: 1 department secretary, 3 division secretaries, 1 GES secretary

Opportunities  Expansion of connections with Asia  External funding for major computer infrastructure  Can we create UG courses to capitalize on current interest in global environmental issues? (GES, GEOG..)

Big Picture  SOEST perspective on new hires? Are we positioned as well as possible for upcoming research challenges? e.g. atmospheric chemistry  Increasing SOEST’s instructional profile at UHM?  SEOST as leader for UHM in connections to Asia?
