How could governance liberate the energy and creativity of congregations to transform souls and bless the world? Monitoring and Assessment to Empower Your Governance Facilitated by Laura Park, Joe Sullivan, and Louise Wolfgramm of Unity Consulting

Agenda Overview Key Monitoring Principles Three Examples Q & A

Effective Monitoring in Congregations... Evaluates the ministry we share and its impact in our lives and in the world Focuses on results, not people or activities Takes the time it needs Intentionally evolves Adds value

Sample End All who come to Our City Congregation feel welcome.

Monitoring Report: Five Sections Policy being monitored Executive interpretation Metrics and/or indicators Rationale Evidence of compliance

Sample Executive Limitation With respect to treatment of staff and volunteers, the executive may not cause or allow conditions that are inhumane, unfair, or unprofessional. Accordingly, the executive may not: 1.Discriminate among existing or potential staff/volunteers on other than clearly job-related criteria, individual performance, or individual qualifications. 1.Subject staff or volunteers to unsafe or unhealthy conditions.

Monitoring Report: Five Sections Policy being monitored Executive interpretation Metrics and/or indicators Rationale Evidence of compliance

Sample Tool: Congregational Survey

9 How did we do? – Ends Statements Yellow bars indicate average for each area. While differences aren’t great the averages have the following pattern: within (5.2) > among (5.1) > beyond (5.0) beyond amongwithin * ** *** * Knowledge of UCU and UU history ** People of all ages feel welcome and connected across identities including race, class, gender, sexual orientation, ability, politics, and education *** Proclaiming the transforming power of our faith Since our Ends statements are new this year there are no comparable benchmarks; however the average score assigned across all previous ES in ‘08 was 4.69 – a number clearly below an average computed across all our new ES.

Sample Tool: Congregational Survey Four questions about respondents’ own spiritual lives showed statistically significant improvement from 2008 to 2009: Feel connected to Unity Church ends statements Feel a sense of belonging to a community within Unity Church Feel a sense of belonging to a community outside of Unity Church. Have experienced real transformation in the past twelve months.

Survey Considerations Demographics Self-reported data Other potential sources of information Correlation of programs and initiatives to outcomes

Discussion in Pairs Take 5 minutes to talk over what you heard with a partner. What was most interesting to you? What questions would you like to ask?

Q & A We’ll have time for 3-5 questions. Please ask a question that hasn’t been asked already. Tell us your name and your congregation. For questions that don’t get answered here, we have a discussion session: Tomorrow, Saturday June 26 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. Hilton Marquette II
