Presentation transcript:

DESIGN AND PROBLEM SOLVING

DESIGN A plan for making something; used to create technology.

DESIGN PROCESS A process that uses problem solving to arrive at the best solution, or design.

Improves products and services already in use.

INVENTION Process of designing new products.

INNOVATION Improving an existing technology.

STEPS OF THE DESIGN PROCESS

1. IDENTIFY THE NEED design brief : a statement of the problem to be solved.

2. GATHER INFORMATION Look for information Talk to people

3. DEVELOP ALTERNATIVE SOLUTIONS Sketching Brainstorming

4. SELECT THE BEST SOLUTION 2D Models: sketching, drawing, rendering

3D Models: – appearance models : resemble finished products, but don’t work – scale models : small, accurate representations of a finished product – prototype : working model

Other modeling techniques: – CAD – computer simulations – mathematical models – construction kits

5. IMPLEMENT THE SOLUTION Function? Safety? Durability? Cost? Ergonomics? Aesthetics? TESTING

6. EVALUATE THE SOLUTION Surveys Complaints Warranty claims
