Making Predictions from Graphs

Trends  Graphs can show a general trend Sometimes you can make a prediction from the data shown on a graph

2 Types of Predictions Extrapolated A prediction made outside, or beyond, the known data points What will the water temperature be after 70 minutes of heating?

2 Types of Predictions Interpolated A prediction made between known data points Usually more accurate than extrapolated predictions What was the water temperature after being heated for 25 minutes?

Example 1 In this graph you can see an upward trend This person saves more money each year Can you determine how much money was saved halfway through 2003? If you said something around $750 you are probably correct! Can you predict how much money will be saved in 2006? Explain. If you said something above $1,000 you are probably correct!

Example 2 In this graph you see an upward trend, a plateau, and a downward trend Can you determine how much garbage was produced halfway through the year 2000? If you said something around 160 tons, you are probably correct! Can you predict how much garbage may be produced in 2006? Explain. If you said something around 120 tons, you are probably correct!

Practice How tall was the tree when it was 2 and a half years old? About 5 feet tall About how tall will the maple tree be in year 6? About 11 feet tall

Practice Predict the approximate weight of the baby in week 5. Around 10 pounds How much do you think the baby weighed when it was born? Probably around 8 pounds
