American Views of Churches in Schools Survey of Over 2,000 American Adults

2 Methodology  The online survey of adult Americans was conducted January 20 – 24, 2012  A sample of an online panel representing the adult population of the US was invited to participate  Responses were weighted by region, party, age, race, religion, gender and education to more accurately reflect the population

3 Methodology Continued  The completed sample is 2,019 online surveys  The sample provides 95% confidence that the sampling error does not exceed +2.2%  Margins of error are higher in sub-groups

Survey Responses

Which of the following statements best describes your opinion?” Americans age (6%) are the least likely to select “Public schools should not rent to any churches or community groups.” Americans with a college degree are More likely to select “Public schools should rent to churches and other community groups” (68% to 63%) More likely to select “Public schools should rent to other community groups, but not churches” (19% to 14%) Less likely to select “Public schools should not rent to any churches or community groups” (10% to 13%) compared to Americans without a college degree.

8 “New York City is no longer allowing churches to rent space in any public schools out of concern that a school would be identified with one particular religious belief or practice. Which of the following statements best describes your opinion?” continued Men when compared to women are More likely to select “Public schools should rent to churches and other community groups” (72% to 58%) Less likely to select “Public schools should rent to other community groups, but not churches” (12% to 19%) Americans who “never” attend a worship service are the least likely (32%) to select “Public schools should rent to churches and other community groups” and the most likely (39%) to select “Public schools should rent to other community groups, but not churches.”

9 “New York City is no longer allowing churches to rent space in any public schools out of concern that a school would be identified with one particular religious belief or practice. Which of the following statements best describes your opinion?” continued Americans who live in a large city are the least likely (59%) to select “Public schools should rent to churches and other community groups” and the most likely (21%) to select “Public schools should rent to other community groups, but not churches.” Americans with no children under 17 living at home are more likely to select “Public schools should rent to other community groups, but not churches” (18% to 10%).

10 “New York City is no longer allowing churches to rent space in any public schools out of concern that a school would be identified with one particular religious belief or practice. Which of the following statements best describes your opinion?” continued Republicans (84%) are the most likely to select “Public schools should rent to churches and other community groups” while Democrats (47%) are the least likely with Independents (67%) falling between the two parties. Democrats (32%) are the most likely to select “Public schools should rent to other community groups, but not churches” while Republicans (2%) are the least likely with Independents (10%) falling between the two parties. Republicans (8%) are the least likely to select “Public schools should not rent to any churches or community groups.”
