Cause/Conflict People were protesting the government, nonviolently. President Assad didn’t like what was happening so he unleashed tanks, combat helicopters and heavy weapons to kill those who opposed him.

Cause/Conflict As a result of President Assad’s horrifying actions, there has been a displacement in the population of Syria. The United Nations says that over 4 million Syrians are now refugees. Most have fled to neighboring countries like Iraq, Jordan, and Lebanon. Some have even gone to Europe.

The People Involved The predominant sides involved include the Assad Regime, the Syrian National Coalition, and the International community

The Assad Regime The Assad Regime is led by Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, and is supported by the Syrian military and by Iran. President Assad is the aggressor in this conflict and has violated numerous U. N. resolutions with his unrestrained bombing of civilian areas, and his blocking of humanitarian aid to the region.

The Syrian National Coalition The Syrian National Coalition opposes the Assad Regime and is supported by several Gulf States. The International community has also taken the side of the opposition forces as groups such as ISIS have started to set up bases of operation in the region. Additionally, many European countries, the United States, and Canada have been working to alleviate the refugee crisis occurring as a result of this conflict.

Timeline 3/11- Syrian citizens begin to peacefully protest the Assad Regime and 100 protesters are killed. 8/11- After a large assault on the city of Hama, hundreds of Syrians are killed by the Assad Regime. Britain, Germany, France, the European Union, and the United States demand President Assad’s Resignation. The Syrian National Council is formed. 5/12- More than one hundred families are massacred in Houla village in Homs, and the United Nations Human Rights Council accuses Assad’s forces of war crimes. 6/14 ISIS declares the establishment of a caliphate in parts of Iraq and Syria. 2/16 The conflict in Syria is ongoing and Syrians are continuing to be displaced.

The End of the Civil War The Civil War in Syria started in July 2011, and is still going on today. The end doesn’t seem very near for the Syrian people.

Awareness and Support Across the globe, innocent people face the threat of genocide, not because of anything they have done, but because of who they are. This Civil War is still going on today and it doesn’t look like it’s ending soon Donate money to the people in Syria → https://secure3.convio.net/sdc/site/Donation2?df_id=4145&4145.donation=form1&s _src=uegheader
