Presentation transcript:

To Pee or not to Pee?

What is this and what do you see? Over time   

Nuclear Isotope Cystogram Rabbit ears

Technetium 99m Used in this study Picked up with a gamma camera Easier isotope to make

Vesicoureteral Reflux (VUR) Urine is only supposed to drain from kidney  bladder, not the other way VUR can lead to many problems –Recurrent UTI –Pyelonephritis Hydronephrosis Renal scarring

VCUG – Voiding cystourethrogram 1* test for VUR – ^ radiation than Tech 99m study.

A little more about VUR The evaluation and management of VUR in children is currently undergoing reevaluation Yearly monitoring to evaluate renal growth and a cystogram (RNC or VCUG) should be performed until the reflux resolves or the reflux is surgically treated. Prophylactic antibiotics are prescribed to reduce UTI risk The chance of spontaneous resolution of reflux is high in children younger than 5 years with grades I-III reflux

Main concern for spontaneous resolution of VUR Need to remain infection free!

THE END So sayith the prophecy….
