Directions For Duty 1 Corinthians 16:13-14

Watch

There has always been a need for God’s people to be on guard –To watch for physical enemies (Neh. 4:9) –To beware of entering into idolatry (Deut. 12:29-30) Even today this is relevant –Watch for our adversary (1 Peter 5:8) –From without and within (Acts 20:29- 31a) –Against temptation (Matt. 26:41)

Watch Stand Fast In The Faith

To have a conviction and follow it –Many have conviction –Some do not follow it, compromise –A need described in 1 Cor. 15:58 In all settings (Jude 3) –Easy to see the overt or public stand (Acts 17) –What about the day-to-day? (Phil. 1:27, ASV) Qualified by “in the faith”

Watch Stand Fast In The Faith Be Brave

Some people act like children (Eph. 4:13-14). “Quit” in the KJV comes from “acquit.” –Only one word in original language. –Literally means “act manly” (see 1 Cor. 13:11). –Courageous. Must be brave in order to: –Turn the other cheek (Matt. 5:39). –Tell the truth (Eph. 4:25). –Speak against worldliness (James 4:4). –Correct a loved one (1 Tim. 5:17).

Watch Stand Fast In The Faith Be Brave Be Strong

We have been given what it takes to be strong (Eph. 6:10ff) Faith (strong) brings victory (1 Jn. 5:4)

Watch Stand Fast In The Faith Be Brave Be Strong Do It All With Love

This tempers other remarks –Must never attempt to domineer –Must be the right kind of servant (2 Tim. 2:24) Bible love –The most abiding thing (1 Cor. 13:13) –Not necessarily emotional love (1 Cor. 13:4- 7) –Has a sense of: Constancy (1 Peter 1:22) Duty (1 Jn. 5:3) Service (Gal. 5:13)
