STEPS TO EXAMINE HAIR EVIDENCE Upon finding hair at a crime scene, things to be done are: 1) Determine whether the hair originated from a human or animal: a) Use microscopic examination b) Need a comprehensive collection of controls c) Use scale structure, medullary index, and medullary shape to match hair samples
2) If human, compare the hair with hair from suspects and victims: a) Compare hair obtained from scalp or pubic area b) Perform DNA typing if skin or blood is left on a root, or have enough hair c) If no DNA typing can be performed, only some degree of probability can be made
HAIR FEATURES TO COMPARE Color, length, and diameter of hair The presence or absence of a medulla The distribution, shape, and color intensity of the pigment granules in the cortex Whether or not hair has been dyed or bleached, and the time passed since coloring

OTHER INFORMATION ABOUT HAIR Hair is know to grow at a rate of approximately one centimeter per month The odds against a head hair originating from another person are about 4500 to 1. The odds against two similar pubic hairs originating from two different individuals are about 800 to 1.
