Natalie Schiavone Research Paper CS

Wire Act of 1961 Congress passed this act in order to prohibit people from using telephone lines to receive bets. “The Wire Act criminalizes the use of a wire communication facility for the transmission in interstate or foreign commerce of bets or wagers or information assisting in the place of bets or wagers on any sporting event or contest…” (Hammer, 2004). If this law has been around, why so many problems???

Some claim the Wire Act of 1961 was made long before the Internet let alone Internet gambling. Internet Gambling sites are mostly based in foreign countries such as Antigua and Barbuda. They claim they are doing nothing wrong because they are not receiving bets on US soil. US v. Cohen finally sets things straight.

US Economy is suffering due to lack of gambling revenues Credit card companies are experiencing more fraud and more debt from clients Convenience of Internet Gambling is creating more addicts Use of online gambling among the youth and on campus

Credit Card Companies are creating new policies to eliminate gambling over the Internet Congress is looking for new ways to ban Internet Gambling while also getting the laws approved. Some states have banned Internet gambling within their borders

Five years after the first Online casino was created 250 to 300 companies world-wide managed 1800 Internet gambling sites. In 2003, Internet gambling revenue was estimated at $5.691 billion. By 2006, Internet gambling revenues are expected to triple equaling approximately $ billion. (CCA,2004) The no.1 form of problem gambling for college students is Internet gambling. (USA Today)
