Presentation transcript:

 Today is day 20 (3/6)  How do different villagers react to the missionaries? For example, who is attracted to their message, and who is not? Why?

 Christianity was first introduced into Nigeria by Augustinian and Capuchin monks coming with slave traders from Portugal in the fifteenth century  After the abolition of slavery, British merchants expanded into the interior of the country, and, in 1886, the Royal Niger Company was chartered. In 1900, the British government established a protectorate which lasted until independence in As British economic and political control spread, so did the efforts of various missionary groups; they were more successful in southern Nigeria than in the north, which was heavily Islamic.  Today, Nigeria is about 50 percent Muslim and 40 percent Christian; about 10 percent of the population still retain the indigenous beliefs portrayed in the novel.

 How were twins regarded in traditional Igbo society?  Does anyone object to this?  Have there been any other killings because of religion?  How do Obierika and Nwoye feel about his death?

 Complete action/reaction worksheet

 See. doc

 How does Okonkwo feel about the new religion? How does he feel about his son converting? For this prompt, you will write two (2) Dear Abby letters explaining the background, situation and the characters feelings – one from Okonkwo and one from Nwoye (half page each)   Creative Writing: You are Achebe for this assignment. Explain what you think will happen once Okonkwo returns home to Umuofia. Include at least ten specific details for full credit. (bullet list is fine)

 Documentary one of three  After, be prepared to write a response. How does modern-day urban Nigeria compare to the setting of the novel. What connections do you see between the book and the video? What surprised you the most or was the most interesting to you?
