Homework Review

Pattern-Block Fractions Finish working on journal pgs , from yesterday, with your shoulder partner. If you need additional help, ask the other teams at your table. Early Finishers: Complete Math Boxes pg. 197 Time: 10 minutes Level: 0-1

Unit 7: Lesson 5 Target/Objective: I can add fractions with like and unlike denominators.

Math Message If the hexagon pattern block is the whole, what fractions are represented by the trapezoid, the rhombus, and the triangle?? The trapezoid represents ½. The rhombus represents ⅓. The triangle represents ⅙. ½ + ⅓ + ⅙ = 1

Adding Fractions There are 2 simple steps to add fractions: Step 1: Make sure the denominators are the same. Step 2: Add the numerators, put the answer over the denominator.

Adding Fractions with Like Denominators ⅓ + ⅓ = ___ Are the denominators the same? Then add the numerators. What’s the answer? ⅔

Adding Mixed Numbers with Like Denominators 1 ⅙ + 2 ⅙ + ⅙ + ⅙ + ⅙ = ___ Are the denominators the same? Add the fractions, then add the whole numbers. What’s the answer? 3 ⅚

Notebook Practice : Adding with Like Denominators ⅓ + ⅔ = ⅛ + ⅜ = ⅗ + ⅕ = 2 ⅔ + 4 ⅓ = 5 ⅕ + 6 ⅗ = 11 ⅜ + 12 ⅜ =

Adding Fractions with Unlike Denominators Step 1: The bottom numbers are different. See how the slices are different sizes? We need to make them the same before we can continue, because we can’t add them like that.

We have to find the LCD Least Common Denominator

Whatever you do to the bottom of the fraction, you must to do the top!!! LCD = 6 ⅙ already has a denominator of 6, so we’ll leave it alone. In order for ⅓ to have a like denominator, we have to multiply the fraction by 2.

Let’s Practice using the LCD ⅔ + ⅙ = – Multiples of 3: 3, 6, 9, 12 – Multiples of 6: 6, 12, 18 3 x ___ = 6 Multiply ⅔ by 2: = X 2
