Ninth Grade Research Project: Types of Note Cards: -Direct Quotations -Paraphrase -Summary

Creating Note Cards with Direct Quotations  Use DQ when  the author has phrased something particularly well.  the words express a meaning as no other words could.  an authority has concisely stated an opinion relevant to your topic.

DQ: How do I do it? 1. Copy the quotation exactly as you see it; this includes spelling and punctuation. 2. Be certain the quote still makes sense within the context of your paper! 3. Don’t forget to introduce the quote! (pack it and unpack it) 4. You MUST surround the item with quotes and include an internal citation!!!

Give it a shot! Create a direct quotation note card: First source from Time (magazine) Page 1; Written by Doris Kearns Goodwin “As the years have passed, Eleanor Roosevelt's influence and stature have continued to grow. Today she remains a powerful inspiration to leaders in both the civil rights and women's movements.”

How did you do? 1 Source number “As the years have passed, Eleanor Roosevelt's influence and stature have continued to grow. Today she remains a powerful inspiration to leaders in both the civil rights and women's movements.” Direct quote 1 Page number

What is paraphrasing? A paraphrase is a detailed restatement of a source’s important ideas. It reflects order, tone, and emphasis. You will paraphrase MOST of the time. Exclude your own opinions and interpretations.

Paraphrasing: How do I do it? 1.Read the excerpt carefully. 2.Determine the author’s purpose/ main idea. 3.Put the idea into your own words. 4.Read what you’ve written to ensure it reflects the author’s main idea/ purpose of the excerpt.

Give it a shot! Create a paraphrased note card. “ Dr. Weisskopf was one of the first physicists to warn of the possible dangers of atomic research. In 1939, he and Leo Szilard, another atomic physicist, recommended that physicists keep secret their findings on nuclear fission instead of publishing them in academic journals, out of fear that the information could help Nazi scientists build atomic weapons.” New York Times; Page 1 Second Source

Paraphrasing: How did you do? Source number2 For fear of Nazi misuse, Dr. Weisskopf, a pioneer in the development of atomic research, kept information about nuclear fission secret. Paraphrased idea 1 Page number

What is summarizing? A summary is a simplification of information. Since it is so concise, every word counts! Choose them carefully. You can omit the specifics of examples and detailed explanations. Summarizing is often done for information that is minor or overlaps with information you’ve already collected.

Summarizing: How do I do it? 1.Read the passage. 2.Process the information to identify the author’s purpose/ main idea. 3.Write that idea in as few words as possible.

Give it a shot! Summarize the final chapters of TKM. Hint: focus on the journey to/from the Halloween pageant. To Kill a Mockingbird; pages Third Source

Summarizing: How did you do? Source number3 Scout and Jem are ambushed by a vengeful Bob Ewell; Arthur “Boo” Radley saves the kids. Bob dies, and Boo is finally free from the confines of his house. Paraphrased idea Page numbers

The End Any questions? Are you sure?
