Developing Scotland’s health information Dr Brian Robson Clinical Director for eHealth NHS National Services Scotland NMAHP eHealth Leads March 2007

The future information needs of NMAHPs…. What do we have now ? What are we designing to have in the future ? What questions are we trying to answer ? What difference will the answers make to patient care, patient safety, professional development ….etc…etc ? Incorporate future NMAHP data into SHIS.

Better information Better Decisions Better Health

Secondary Uses Service ( SUS ) Scottish Health Information Service ( SHIS ) The programme formerly known as…

What is Scottish Health Information Service (SHIS) ? A SHIS will enable to re-use of current NHS data SHIS will provide tools ( including IT) to enable such re-use- maximise their use SHIS will be a service for the NHS SHIS will be dependant on robust information governance A smarter, more efficient and user-friendly way of delivering information intelligence

‘Data warehousing’ …what’s it all about ?

NHS Scotland Data Warehouse / Repository

Common Dimensions – Business Objects Data warehousing GRO ( DEATHS ) SMR 01 ( ACUTE ) SMR 04 ( MENTAL Health) Prescribing ( Primary care) SMR 06 ( CANCER) QOF ( GP ) DENTAL A&E ( EDIS ) Prescribing ( ACUTE ) SCI Referrals Workforce ( SWISS ) Blood Transfusio n Waiting Times SPARR A ( predictive) Others ………. HEAT Benchmarking/ Clinical Governance NAVIGATOR

In short…enabling access to information Unprecedented local access to national datasets Drilling down on local data Data linkages flexible/bespoke reporting Benchmarking Simplified, clear presentation and narrative

Not just about government targets !

Benefits Improved access to information Improved linkages of patient data from different sources Local access via web services To support: –Clinical governance - patient safety, quality indicators. –Service planning –Performance management –Policy implementation –Public health information e.g. surveillance –Research and development e.g. effectiveness, outcomes Informatics workforce focussed on ‘higher value’ activities.

SHIS – making better use of current information….. But what about the future ?....

Will better IT will produce better information ? …..only if it is designed to do so

SMR and other datasets   EHR information Over time, information will be a by-product of using EHR systems, will be loaded to the SHIS NHS data warehouse as appropriate and utilised to meet future needs SMR Other national datasets Data derived from EHR via SHIS SMR Other national datasets Data from EHR via SHIS SMR Other national datasets ??

The future information needs of NMAHPs…. What do we have now ? What are we designing to have in the future ? What questions are we trying to answer ? What difference will the answers make to patient care, patient safety, professional development ….etc…etc ? Incorporate future NMAHP data into SHIS.

A marathon….not a sprint !

Thank you Further information on SHIS:
