Solve Two-Step Equations

Vocabulary A two-step equation, such as 2x + 3 = 9 has two different operations, multiplication and addition. To solve a two-step equation, undo the operations in reverse order of the order of operations. Step 1: undo the addition or subtraction first. Step 2: undo the multiplication or division.

Example 1: Solve 2x + 3 = 9. Check your solution 2x + 3 = 9write the equation. -3 = -3 undo addition first by subtraction 2x = 6 2 2undo multiplication by division x = 3simplify Check your solution

Example 2: Solve 3x + 2 = 23. Check your solution 3x + 2 = 23write the equation. -2 = -2 undo addition first by subtraction 3x = undo multiplication by division x = 7simplify Check your solution

Example 3: Solve -2x – 7 = 3. Check your solution -2x – 7 = 3write the equation. +7 = +7 undo addition first by subtraction -2x = undo multiplication by division x = -5simplify Check your solution

Example 4: Solve

Practice: 1) 2x + 4 = 10 2)3x – 4 = 8 3)

Summary To solve two-step equations, undo addition or subtraction first and then undo multiplication or division.
