Geologic Time Earth Science Geological Time No Beginning & No End Our planet

The number of years that have passed since a specific event occured.

What is numerical dating?

The exact age.

What is absolute age?

This means that rocks are placed in their proper sequence of formation.

What is relative dating?

Danish geologist credited with being the first to reorganize a sequence of events in an outcrop of sedimentary layers.

Who is Nicolaus Steno ?

This law states that the rock layers on the bottom are older than the rock layers on the top.

What is the law of superposition?

The study of the earth

What is geology?

Geology has been divided into two areas

What are physical and historical geology?

The study of the ocean.

What is Oceanography?

The study of the atmosphere.

What is Meterology?

The study of the universe.

What is Astronomy?

Represents the greatest amount of time.

What are eons?

Eons are divided into this.

What are Eras?

Eras are further divided into this.

What are periods?

This represents the smallest amount of time.

What are epochs?

A scale that divides the earth’s history into different time periods.

What is the geological time scale?

What is Metamorphism?

Model that illustrates the origin of the three basic rock types.

What is the rock cycle?

What is crystalization?

What is a sediment?

What is a lithification ?

The water portion of our planet.

What is the Hydrosphere?

The gaseous portion of our planet.

What is the Atmosphere?

Where life is found.

What is the Biosphere?

The solid part of the planet.

What is the Geosphere?

The gradual release of gases from molten rock.

What is a volcanic outgasing?
