 “The Zuni people have lived in the American Southwest for thousands of years. Their cultural and religious traditions are rooted, in large part, in the people's deep and close ties to the mountains, forests, and deserts of this ancient Zuni homeland. Traditional Zuni life is oriented around a matrilineal clan system and a complex ceremonial system base on a belief in the ancestors (ancient ones).”  According to Zuni tradition, Awonawilona was the creator of the world who became the sun and created “mother earth” and “father sky” "The Pueblo Of Zuni." A boy discovered a young eagle that had fallen out of its nest.

 The Boy cared for the eagle and neglected his duties in the field.  This upset his family, so they decided that they must kill the eagle.  The eagle told the boy that his family was planning to kill him and that he has to fly away the next day, even though he loves the boy  The boy convinces the eagle to bring him to the Sky Land with him

 The boy went with the eagle to the Sky Land.  The people who lived there made the boy a coat of feathers and they taught him how to fly.  He was told that he could fly anywhere he wished, except to the South Land.

 However, the boy grew curious about what was in the south.  So he flew south until he came across a beautiful city with people dancing around fires.  He decided that the city could not be bad and he landed and danced with the people  They gave him a place to sleep, but when he woke in the morning, the city was no longer beautiful and there were no people  Instead, there were just dust and bones around him  The bones rose up and formed into skeletons the boy started to run away, for he could not find his coat of eagle feathers  The skeletons began to chase the boy

 Just as they were about to reach him, he saw a badger  The badger carried the boy down into his hole where the bone people could not follow  The badger scolded him for being foolish, but he felt sorry for the boy so he showed him the way back to the city of the eagles  It was a long and hard journey back  When he arrived the eagles would not let him enter because he had disobeyed  The eagle that the boy had raised took pity on him and gave him an old ragged coat so he could return home  His flight back was very difficult, but his eagle friend circled in the clouds watching over him  When he reached his village, the eagle took the coat he had given him and left  From that time on Eagle Boy lived with his people, though he lifted his eyes in joy whenever the eagles would pass by overhead
