One Unlucky Man By: Hannah Cook, Allison Loach, Mary Claire Freese

Meet Odeipus The best hero archetype EVA! (protects his peeps, goes on a journey to overcome trials- so he doesn’t kill his dad) His father, King Laius of Thebes, dumped him in the mountains because of a propecy from the oracle that he’d kill his dad and marry his mom Was later adopted by King Polybus and Queen Merope of Corinth (between Athens + Sparta) and raised as their own Was followed around by the Three Furies, aka the Erinyes, who were torturous The myth starts out with Odeipus as an old man begging King Theseus if he could die peacefully in his city. And oh yeah, he’s BLIND!

Odei’s Adventurous Escapades Odeipus heard the prophecy for himself and took to the woods to change the fate Wanders a bit, kills a man who gets in his way, and comes to a city with an evil temptress, the sphinx, guarding it Here’s how he got to the cityhow Asks him an “unsolvable” riddle, and he answers it! Riddle: What walks on 4 legs in the morning, 2 at noon, and 3 in the evening? Answer: man- baby crawl, adult walk, granny cane

Who are you, the King of England? Since he answered the riddle, the people think he is so smart and ask them to be their new king of Thebes. He accepts, marries the queen (his biological mother), and takes to finding the guy who killed the king Queen Jocasta wore a necklace, made for the first queen of Thebes, that made her a hottie forever All three of his kids were born while he was married to Jocasta, his mother

A Series of Unfortunate Events The one servant escapee is brought before Odei and testifies to who was the killer of their old king, Laius The servant says that it was him! And oh yeah… it was. So he has to poke his own eyes out because he vowed he would do this in revenge The servant was also the one who put him away in the mountains, so he knew that he’d married his biological mother. Queen Jocasta was mortified and killed herself in horror

Brain Break!! Why did the chicken cross the road? Hint: All your answers are wrong.

Now, he.. Wanders about, being shooed away by city folk because he was followed by the Erinyes. The story catches up to him asking King Theseus permission to live in the city The cool king says yes, and he dies there peacefully.

But WAIT, there’s more! His 2 sons, Eteocles and Polynices, come up with the brilliant idea (wonder where they get their brains) that they can share the throne! Eteocles gets to have his year first, but after it’s up, he won’t give it back Polynices goes to King Argos and bribes his sister (who has a lot of influence on him) with the magical necklace of Harmonica She agrees to give him an army, but neither of the brother’s armies can defeat each other…

Brotherly Love The brothers decide to fight each other singlehandedly. Whoever won would be crowned king. Eteocles gave Polynices a deathly wound, but before he went down, he struck back. They both died a pretty boring death The son of Eteocles became the new king of Thebes The magic necklace was hung in Delphi to never be worn again
