MAPPS members do big things in the profession…and for the profession. Background +Created by the co-chairs of the UAS Aviation Rulemaking Committee (ARC) in May Purpose is to seek input from users or potential users of UAS on what the immediate, near and long-term issues/hurdles are or might be for fielding this technology. +The ARC tasked AUVSI, the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA) and the Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA) to co-chair this working group which will be comprised of multiple associations representing a diverse group of potential UAS users in certain key industries.

Goals +Objective – Create a representative working group of potential UAS users to help identify barriers and suggest recommendations to allow UAS (all sizes and types) to fly beyond visual line-of-sight (BVLOS). The group will also help educate users on the FAA’s integration work. +Scope of Task – Get user input on how they would like to operate UAS, identify current barriers, and suggest ways to break down those barriers. +Expected Deliverable – A scoping paper outlining hurdles for BVLOS commercial operations in the now, near, and far term. If possible, include business cases to help educate the ARC. +Special Considerations- Examine using authority under Section 333 of the FAA Modernization Reform Act which allows the “Secretary of Transportation to determine if certain unmanned aircraft systems may operate safely in the national airspace system before completion of the plan and rulemaking required by section 332 of this Act or the guidance required be section 334 of this Act.”

Activities  Dialogue on how UAS could be utilized for their respective industries and addressed the potential hurdles they may face to operate UAS safely  Discussed the relationship and sought clarification between line-of- sight and beyond visual line-of-sight usage of UAS  Discussed need for FAA to clarify commercial vs public aircraft  Members were tasked with submitting their individual proposals to the co-chairs which identify; 1.Anticipated BVLOS operations in the next 3-5 years 2.Perceived barriers to conducting those operations 3.Recommendations for the FAA to consider on how to remove those barriers
