3-3 RATE OF CHANGE February

Objectives I can determine the rate of change of a line from a graph I can determine the rate of change of a line from coordinates I can use slope to describe the rate of change

Agenda What is Rate of Change? How does it relate to graphing linear functions? Constant Rate of Change Finding Slope using a Graph Slopes of Horizontal and Vertical Lines

What is Rate of Change? Rate of Change: allows you to see the relationship between two quantities that are changing Slope: rate of change of a line

Rate of Change with a Graph

Constant Rate of Change If the rate of change is constant, the function is linear The rate of change does not have to be constant though (think about the ski problem example) We use the letter m to represent slope in equations

Slope

Rise over Run For Rise: If you move up, the number is positive If you move down, the number is negative For Run: If you move left, the number is negative If you move right, the number is positive

Example Problem Determine the slope using the table below. Is this a linear function. Answer Yes or No. Hours spent stalking on Instagram (x) Number of photos scrolled through of your crazy ex (y)
