The Montana state bird is named the western meadowlark! To Meriwether Lewis goes the distinction of not only discovering the bitterroot but also first recording what became Montana’s state bird. Under the date of June 22, 1805, Lewis noted in his journal the appearance of a lark with a yellow chest and a black spot on the throat. It resembled in size, action, and color the eastern lark with witch he was more familiar, but the song was more richer and more varied!

The Montana state nickname is the treasure state or the big sky state! One of the more popular nicknames of Montana is the treasure state

The Montana state flag is easily identifiable by the large gold letters spelling out Montana cleared at the top! The state seal in the center displays some of the states beautiful scenery! And reflects some of our states pioneer activities, including farming and mining!

The Montana state animal is the grizzly bear! More than 55,000 students in 425 schools voted the grizzly bear to be the Montana state animal! The grizzly bears scientific name is ursus arctos horribilis. The grizzly bear is probably the most terrifying and awe-inspiring animal in Montana!
