Your Digestive System It is about 9 meters long from beginning to end. You make 1 to 3 pints of saliva per day! The average male will eat about 50 tons of food during his lifetime in order to sustain a weight of 150 lbs Does it really take 7 years to digest chewing gum?

Where does the food go? Mouth Esophagus Stomach Small Intestine Large Intestine Out of the anus through the rectum.

Mouth Mechanical Digestion Chewing Chemical Digestion Saliva

Esophagus Muscular Tube Connects mouth and stomach. Food stays for only 10 seconds. Food moves by peristalsis Involuntary waves of muscle contraction.

Stomach A J-shaped muscular pouch It expands as you eat Average adult volume: 2 liters Mechanical digestion Churning Chemical digestion Digestive juices Hydrochloric acid

Small Intestine About 6 meters long (22ft) Most chemical digestion occurs. Most absorbtion of nutrients.

Large Intestine The last section About 1.5 meters long (bathtub) Water absorbed into blood Other waste readied for elimination. Ends at the rectum Material is compressed into solid form.

Other Organs Liver Produces bile A chemical that aids in digestion Pancreas Produces digestive enzymes

Review Digestive Order esophagus mouth stomach small intestine large intestine rectum

Review What kind(s) of digestion are utilized by the mouth? The stomach? About how long is the small intestine? Where does the most absorption of nutrients occur? Where is the waste readied for elimination? About how long is your digestive system?
